Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences of Warmadewa University

Abstract

Previous sudies on commercial sex workers reported that the number of commercial sex workers spreading throughout Denpasar city and its surroundings is 250 persons and 14% of them had been infected with HIV/ AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). However, referring to the data in the City Health Service of Denpasar, the number of direct commercial sex workers throughout Sanur area in 2017 is 450 persons. Such number confirms that the risk of sexually transmitted infection among the direct commercial sex workers in the area is intensely high. Condom use is seemingly ruled out. Thus, by the present study, an explorative investigation is carried out to explore more about the condom use among the direct commercial sex workers in Sanur. The study applies qualitative research design. A purposive sampling technique was implemented in selecting 15 informants. The 15 informants included the direct commercial sex workers, pimps, and customers. These informants were provided with in-depth interviews. The results of data analysis showed that during sexual intercourses not all the direct commercial sex workers applied the use of condoms. The leading reason was the male partners disliked the condoms in the sexual intercourse. However, it is also found that economic factor had given rise to avoiding the condom use. It should be noted well that using condoms during sexual intercourse decreases the growing number of the direct commercial sex workers.

Abstract

Microalgae of D. salina possesses multiple pharmacological properties which are mainly attributed to the active compounds such as polyphenol, chlorophyll and B-carotene. However, the utilization of D. salina as a neuroprotective agent in Parkinsons disease is still questionable. In present study, we observed the potential neuromodulatory effects of D. salina extract against the toxicity exposed to paraquat in fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Male wild-type fruit flies were concomitantly induced by paraquat (3.5mM) and D. salina methanolic extract (200 ug/mL) in their diet during 4 days of observation. Paraquat fed fruit flies had exhibited a higher incidence mortality and the worst influence on locomotor phenotypes (negative geotaxis) when compared to the control. D. salina extract treatment showed protection ability against these deleterious effects of paraquat. Though, paraquat exposure caused a marked increase in malondialdehide (MDA) content as indicating increase lipid peroxidation process in brains of fruit flies. Meanwhile, paraquat toxicity was also related to a significant decrease on dopamine level in head of fruit flies, which were attenuated by D. salina extract treatment. Our results conclude that D. salina extract significantly reduced the toxicity of paraquat compounds exposed to fruit flies and proved the usefulness of this model as a potential therapeutic strategy for symptoms that appear in Parkinsons disease.

Department of Anatomy, Medical Faculty and Health Science of Warmadewa University, Bali-Indonesia

Abstract

Measurement of growth and development in children is the most important thing related to early and appropriate management that can be done if deviations are found. Growth measurements are measurements of the childs weight, height and head circumference. Some previous studies have shown that there are many delays in child development. There are several ways that can be used to screen development, one of them is by using a developmental pre-screening questionnaire that requires special officers trained in its implementation. The results of measurements of growth are often associated with development in children. Based on this, further research is needed regarding the relationship between screening for development and growth in children. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the results of screening on development using the KPSP method and the results of measuring growth parameters in children aged 0-6 years in Denpasar. The study was conducted using cross sectional analytic. Based on the Pearson correlation test (α = 0.05), it shows that there is a significant negative correlation (r = -0.218; p <0.05) between weight and development. This shows that the higher body weight will further reduce the level of child development.

Abstract

The drought tolerant phosphate solubilizing bacteria is needed to dissolve phosphate (P) inorganic which is usually low in availability at dry land. This study is aimed to obtain a consortium of drought tolerant phosphate solubilizing bacteria which has high potential in dissolving P-inorganic. An experimental study which has 4 treatments of bacterial combinations has been conducted in a laboratory. The first treatment was the combinations of Pseudomonas azotoformans (PA), Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) and Bacillus paramycoides (BP). The second treatment was the combination of PA and AB. The third treatment was PA and BP, then the fourth treatment was AB and BP. The potential of the consortium bacteria in dissolving P-inorganic was measured qualitatively using phosphate dissolution index (FDI) on solid pikovskayas medium. While, the potential of the consortium bacteria in dissolving P-inorganic was measured quantitatively by measuring dissolved P using the ascorbic acid method in liquid pikovskayas medium containing 0.5% Ca3(PO4)2. The results showed that the consortium of those three bacteria (PA AB and BP) has the best potential to dissolve P-inorganic compared to other combinations. In addition, the three bacteria combination also resulted in the highest dissolved P with 0.29% potential dissolution, followed by combination of AB and BP (0.19%), and PA and BP (0.18%), respectively. Thus, before the consortium of these three bacteria is applied in soil, it is needed further experiment of potential of the bacteria in dissolving soil P-inorganic.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the quality of citrus cv. Siam through fertilization and pruning. This experiment used factorial randomized block design consisting of 2 factors. The first factor is fertilization consisting of 3 levels (P0 = only fertilized with manure/control, P1 = manure,N,P,K,Ca, and P2 = manure,N,P,K,Ca,Zn,Cu). The second treatment is pruning consisting of 3 levels (M0 =without pruning, M1 =pruning young shoots, and M2 =pruning young shoots, leaves and twigs that are protected and affected by disease). Fertilization treatment with P2 improved fruit quality, which was reflected by the increase of harvested fruit weight per tree (99.79%); weight per fruit (35.69%) and total dissolved solids (30.22%). Harvested fruit weight, weight per fruit, and total dissolved solids on treatment with P2 were 3442.76g, 173.58g, and 9.48obrix, respectively, but on control that were only 1673.13g; 127.92g and 7.28obrix. In the pruning treatment, the best results were obtained in M2 which was reflected in the increase in weight of fruit harvested per tree (40.91%), weight per fruit (19.56%) and total dissolved solids (25.55%). Fruit weight per tree, weight per fruit, and total dissolved solids in M2 treatment were 3638.77g, 173.58g, and 9.63obrix respectively, but in controls only 2582.34g, 145.92g, and 7.67obrix

Abstract

Mangrove plants are widely used traditionally in treating various types of infectious diseases in the people of Lombok Island. This study aims to isolate and characterize endophytic bacteria from the roots, stems, leaves and fruits of mangrove Rhizophora mucronata Lam. which grows in Gili Sulat, and to determine their antibacterial activity against some patogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Media used for isolation were NA and TSA. Antibacterial activity tests were carried out with well diffusion methods, and the level of antibacterial activity refers to the category according to Vasanthakumari. Characterization of endophytic bacteria includes morphological of colonies, cell morphology, physiology. Eighteen (18) endophytic bacteria isolates were obtained. Results showed that 12 isolates of endophytic bacteria had moderate (8-12mm) to strong category (> 12mm) of their antibacterial activity against B. cereus and P. aeruginosa. Isolate of NBM2(1) gave the strongest antibacterial activity against B. cereus. It can be concluded that endophytic bacteria isolated from mangrove R. mucronata Lam. is highly potential to be developed as a new antibacterial source, especially against B. cereus pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract

Anthracene, together with other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), is a persistent and toxic soil contaminant because its low water solubility and high hydrophobicity. The effectiveness of PAH degradation could be enhanced by using biosurfactant. In this study, we isolated bacteria that were able to degrade anthracene and also produce biosurfactant. Samples were taken from oil contaminated soil at Jakarta Bay. Isolation was done in a Minimal Salt Medium (MSM) supplemented with 1% crude oil. Screening methods for biosurfactant production include Blood Hemolysis, Drop Collapse Assay and Oil Displacement Assay. Three isolates which have biosurfactant production and anthracene degradation capability was identified based on 16SrRNA gene. These isolates were identified as Ochrobactrum intermedium AMA9, Ochrobactrum tritici CHA60, and Pseudomonas stutzeri CRA7. Based on GC-MS analysis, Ochrobactrum intermedium AMA9 showed high ability to degrade 84,79% anthracene in liquid MSM medium supplemented by 100 ppm anthracene after seven days incubation.
